From the Moka Blag after the very first Moka Carnival fete ever:
CARNIVAL DANCE 1984
If you were to judge from the comments made by those who attended the Carnival dance at the Club on Carnival Sunday (all day fete), then the Club's fete had to be the best fete of the Carnival Season.
Some people insist that it must become an annual affair. For those of you who weren't there - you certainly missed a treat.
The first meeting of the organising committee was held at the club on Friday February 3rd and thereafter they met every Wednesday evening (four Wednesdays) to ensure a successful project. And what a success it turned out to be - both in terms of enjoyment and in making a profit.
The idea was for a modest crowd, a good Deejay and little expense, as the club happens to be in a tight financial bind at the present time. As a result, the committee sought to have everything sponsored. Van Leer Containers kindly paid for the rentals of chemical toilets, chairs and tables. Normandie and Food Etcetera Limited cooked the pelau. Prestige Holdings various things, Pat Hernandez-Printing, J.D. Sellier & Co - security, and so on - WITCO, Xerox, Sibel Ltd (one Deejay), Reep, Fojo & Holder, Trinidad Distributors Ltd., Catelli-Primo Ltd., and Albrosco (meat for the pelau), and lots of other small donations from a variety of members' companies. The Japanese golfing community donated one thousand dollars.
A total of 580 tickets was sold, at $30.00 each, which included a pelau lunch served by a bevy of beautiful lady members. There were two bars, one upstairs and the other alongside the pool both manned by Club members.
The fete really began swinging around two o'clock and went on right up until almost eight o'clock when people began leaving either for Dimanche Gras or to get a little rest before Jourvert.
The final figure from the committee puts the profit at $21,450.00. The organising committee comprised - Derek Johnson-Chairman, Eddie Ayin - Advertising, Bill Agard - Bar, Mike Hackshaw/Tony Proudfoot -Music & Security, T.K. Austin - Construction, Rentals & Clean-up, Mike Traboulay/David Aleong - Sponsorships, and the ladies - Angle Hodgkinson, June Thorne, Verna Salandy - Eats, Joanne Attin - Decorations & Signs.
